Research indicates that the chance of having a stroke from a chiropractic adjustment is estimated to be over 1 in 1 million. As these risks are so low, there is a lot of controversy over whether stroke can even be considered a significant risk. You have a better chance of being struck by lightning multiple times. It has been established by Governments that chiropractic is the SAFEST and most effective treatment for back pain. Medical treatment results in more than 180,000 deaths each year.
- Myth: Prescription and non-prescription drugs are safe.
Truth: Adverse reactions to properly prescribed medications are the third leading cause of death in North America. Chiropractic care offers a safe, drug free alternative to many ailments.
- Myth: Once you go to the Chiropractor, you’ll always have to go.
Truth: Regular adjustments are a part of a healthy lifestyle. The choice to continue is yours. Patients are encouraged to decide how much Chiropractic care they want. Truth: Chiropractic students receive 4,485 hours of college classroom instruction vs. 4,248 hours for other medical students. Chiropractors are licensed by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario.
- Myth: It’s safe and beneficial to perform self-adjustments.
Truth: While self adjustments can give temporary relief and a false sense of correcting the problem. In fact, self-adjustments actually create the sensation by manipulating the joints above and below the affected joint thereby leading to unnecessary extra movement to that joint. It also may lead to arthritis.
- Myth: Your bones grind against each other during an adjustment.
Truth: The noise is the release of carbon dioxide gas from the spine that creates the popping sound you hear after the adjustments. In general the spinal adjustments we do in the office are extremely gentle, and do not hurt. Occasionally; however, you may be mildly sore after the first adjustment; similar to starting an exercise program.
- Myth: Chiropractic care is expensive.
Truth: Many insurance companies cover adjustments because they have statistically quantified the benefits of preventative care versus drugs and surgery. Medical treatment is usually 50-70X more expensive than chiropractic treatment and over 80% of the cost is for diagnosis. Chiropractic has been proven through research to be 3X more cost-effective.
